One of Vertebrae’s earliest projects, Fat Fringe demonstrates how precise geometric processes applied to an economical material – paper – can form vast, novel environments. Fat Fringe composed of die-cut paper modules suspended from a curved armature forming a dynamic canopy. The sculptural installation swoops down into the gallery, dividing space and producing a variety of environments. Visitors can view the modules up close in some areas and feel their presence overhead in others. At times the canopy almost reaches the ground. There is a twin ‘other’ space above the suspended installation where viewers cannot go, but can catch glimpses of between the folds of paper.

This suspended art installation is the first in a series of projects that explore the potential to form complex three-dimensional environments through geometric processes applied to two-dimensional materials and arrayed through space. The threshold of the canopy is thickened through bends in the paper – from some viewpoints it is solid, while from others it is porous. These subtle differences create a playful and interactive experience.
