By re-using the existing foundation and framing of a 1960’s suburban home, selective architectural interventions greatly minimize the waste and cost that typically result from demolishing and starting fresh. The result is a completely transformed space—a fun, light-filled, and colorful home for a family of four.
The dark wood, metal, and stucco exterior form a striking contrast with the play of color, pattern, and texture within. A two-story wood screen separates the entry from the rest of the home while allowing light and air to pass into the kitchen. The wood screen also acts as a guardrail for the stair and hallway above. Together, the screen, tile fireplace, yellow painted steel stair guardrail, and blue kitchen reference the home’s mid-century origins while asserting a contemporary character through minimalist detailing and stark geometric forms. Large bifold doors seamlessly extend the interior into the temperate, coastal climate, mediated through covered decks and patios that invite engagement with the outdoors.
This design embraces adaptive reuse, transforming a conventional mid-century structure into a vibrant, contemporary home. Through strategic interventions and a focus on materiality, light, and connection to the outdoors, the result is a dynamic living environment that balances functionality, sustainability, and a distinct architectural identity.
